NYSE Owner Embraces a Crypto-Native Model

Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), the owner of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), is preparing to enter the market for round-the-clock derivatives trading. Through an agreement with Trade[XYZ], it aims to establish a new U.S.-based platform that would allow investors to trade derivatives linked to cryptocurrency, equity and commodity prices around the clock, including outside traditional exchange hours. The project remains subject to obtaining the necessary regulatory approvals. Hyperliquid’s blockchain infrastructure will serve as its technological foundation.

Focus on Retail Traders and Perpetual Futures

According to ICE, institutional participants account for more than 99% of its current market participation. The proposed platform, tentatively named ICE[XYZ], is intended to complement this model by targeting retail and active short-term traders. These users would gain access to so-called perpetual futures—derivatives with no expiration date that may employ a periodic funding mechanism through which payments are exchanged between holders of long and short positions. Investors could therefore speculate on price movements in both traditional and digital assets even on a Sunday, without acquiring ownership rights in the underlying shares by trading these contracts.

Clear Division of Responsibilities and Strong Financial Backing

The planned market structure is intended to be based on a clear division of responsibilities. ICE would operate the regulated marketplace and provide the clearing infrastructure. Trade[XYZ] would be responsible for product design and implementation, with the Hyperliquid blockchain network providing the underlying technology. According to its own figures, Trade[XYZ] has recorded cumulative notional trading volume exceeding USD 650 billion, while its 30-day trading volume stood at approximately USD 67 billion as of November 2, 2026, according to analytics platform DefiLlama. The project’s potential is also underscored by capital investments: ICE has confirmed an undisclosed strategic investment, while prominent U.S. macro investor Stanley Druckenmiller has also invested in Trade[XYZ]. The market reacted positively, with the price of the HYPE token rising 15% to approximately USD 91.21 following the announcement.

Market Risks and Regulatory Hurdles

Trading outside regular market hours carries specific risks associated with limited liquidity. When the underlying market is closed, the price of a derivative may deviate more significantly from the last available price of the underlying asset. When traditional exchanges reopen, this creates the risk of sharp price gaps and subsequent forced liquidations of leveraged positions. Trading these derivatives, particularly with leverage, is highly risky and may result in the rapid loss of a substantial portion or even all of the invested capital. The planned platform is expected to operate within the regulatory framework and under the oversight of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), with its launch contingent on obtaining the necessary regulatory approvals. Although the regulator has, in certain cases, permitted perpetual contracts to be traded in a regulated environment, those decisions do not constitute automatic approval for other products or for the proposed ICE[XYZ] platform, which has not yet received final approval.

Conclusion

Intercontinental Exchange’s move illustrates how traditional financial institutions are beginning to adopt product models developed and proven outside the conventional banking system. The project structurally separates institutional clearing from higher-risk retail trading, helping protect ICE’s existing business from the direct transmission of those risks. Ultimately, however, the commercial success of ICE[XYZ] will depend not only on 24/7 technological availability but, above all, on obtaining regulatory approvals and maintaining robust liquidity, including on weekends and public holidays.
