South Korean banking unit KB Kookmin connects JPMorgan’s blockchain with the SWIFT network
Can the connection of a private institutional blockchain and a traditional banking network accelerate international trade? South Korea’s KB Kookmin Bank, which manages assets worth more than 550 billion USD, will launch a new wholesale settlement system for corporate importers and exporters in August 2026. By using JPMorgan’s closed interbank platform Kinexys, intended exclusively for institutional transactions, not for the public cryptocurrency market, in combination with the SWIFT network, it aims to offer near-instant settlement in USD across ten countries.
Kinexys and SWIFT
The technological foundation of the entire project is Kinexys, the institutional blockchain network of the American investment bank JPMorgan. This platform, previously known as Onyx, specializes in institutional payments, tokenization, and digital asset management. A fundamental element of the innovation is the direct connection of this blockchain infrastructure with the existing global SWIFT payment network. As reported by the South Korean news agency Yonhap, this hybrid combination of the new and traditional systems will make it possible to achieve near-instant cross-border payments, accelerate foreign exchange settlement, and generally streamline the processing of international transactions.
Geographical coverage and primary focus
In the first phase of operation, the new service will focus exclusively on transfers carried out in US dollars, which corresponds to the dominant position of this currency in global trade. The payment network will initially be interconnected across ten countries. The confirmed countries include the United States of America, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. The remaining six countries have not yet been specified. For import and export companies operating in these territories, this means the possibility of making payments with a substantially lower risk of delay.
The capital strength of the South Korean leader
The launch of this service is also supported by the strong background of the banking institution itself. KB Kookmin Bank is a key part of KB Financial Group. According to an April 2026 research report by the analytical company S&P Global, KB Financial Group is the largest lender in South Korea by asset volume. It ranks 28th overall in the Asia-Pacific region. The group manages total assets worth 552.76 billion USD, which provides it with sufficient stability and capacity to promote demanding technological innovations at the international level.
A shift toward practical use
The project represents a significant milestone in connecting two previously distinct worlds. By combining the high throughput of the Kinexys blockchain network, the global reach of the SWIFT network, and the dominant position of the US dollar, a system is being created that moves distributed ledger technology from the stage of theoretical concepts into real banking practice. The main benefit remains, above all, the removal of time barriers in foreign exchange settlement, the simplification of administration for trading companies, and the overall acceleration of capital flows between Asia, the Middle East, and America.

CLARITY Act Hits a Senate Wall: What the Failed 49–50 Vote Means for U.S. Crypto Regulation
The most ambitious attempt to establish a comprehensive regulatory framework for digital assets in the United States has encountered a major obstacle. On September 15, 2026, the U.S. Senate rejected a motion to invoke cloture on proceeding to the CLARITY Act (H.R. 3633) by a vote of 49–50, falling short of the 60 votes required. The result does not represent a final rejection of the legislation, but it means that the Senate did not proceed to consideration of the bill at that stage and leaves the future of U.S. crypto market structure regulation uncertain.
