Mastercard simplifies cross-border stablecoin transfers
Can stablecoins become the new standard for global trade if their development in practice encounters complex verification and regulatory obstacles? This is precisely the challenge that payments giant Mastercard is attempting to address in a new pilot project in cooperation with Borderless. Together, they are connecting the world of traditional payments with blockchain infrastructure and demonstrating what the future of international transfers could look like.
Launch of the pilot project
Global card giant Mastercard, in cooperation with infrastructure network Borderless, is launching a new pilot project focused on simplifying and securing cross-border stablecoin transactions. The initiative aims to increase the overall credibility of transfers and remove operational barriers in international payments through the standardized Mastercard Crypto Credential framework. This system is based on common rules, verification signals and governance mechanisms, while the testing will explore new ways to provide market participants with a higher degree of certainty and simplify approval and management processes for blockchain transfers.
Division of responsibilities
According to Kevin Lehtiniitty, CEO and co-founder of Borderless, meeting regulatory requirements (compliance) is among the greatest obstacles to the development of stablecoin payments. Current practice often requires repeated and unnecessarily complex checks between each pair of participating parties. Mastercard therefore seeks to apply an approach inspired by traditional correspondent banking, where verified results of compliance checks can be securely passed further along the payment chain. In this architecture, Mastercard Crypto Credential acts exclusively as a verification and governance layer. Mastercard will therefore not directly process funds or perform the final settlement of transactions within the project itself. Borderless assumes the role of payment orchestration and the provision of technical infrastructure for transfers.
Billion-dollar acquisition and continuous settlement
The upcoming project fits into a comprehensive strategy through which Mastercard is building its position in the digital asset segment. The company recently completed the acquisition of BVNK, a company specializing in stablecoin infrastructure, for 1.8 billion USD. In addition, the card company announced in June its intention to expand its own payment settlement capabilities to support intraday settlement as well as payment processing during weekends and holidays. As part of this plan, it expects to use six major stablecoins, including Circle’s USDC, Paxos’ PYUSD, USDG, USDP, Ripple’s RLUSD and SoFi’s SoFiUSD. Mastercard’s steps confirm that the company’s attention is focused not only on the transfer of capital itself, but primarily on building trustworthy verification and regulatory infrastructure.

A quarter of Canadians already own crypto-assets: As market interest grows, stricter rules are also coming
A survey by the Ontario Securities Commission (OSC) showed a significant increase in cryptocurrency ownership since 2023. However, many investors still misunderstand the scope of client protection or regulation, while the government has proposed a ban on digital asset ATMs.
Institutional platform: Ripple enables RLUSD stablecoin management
A new tool designed for companies and financial institutions significantly simplifies the creation, management and redemption of the RLUSD stablecoin within a single integrated platform. This technological shift comes at a crucial time, when Ripple’s cryptocurrency, less than a year after its launch, is firmly establishing itself among the ten largest US dollar stablecoins and expanding its use across the market.
